Ministry of Justice: Artificial Intelligence

Asked by Nick TimothyConservativeMinistry of JusticeTabled Answered 25 June 2026UIN 11812

The question

To ask the Secretary of State for Justice, how much his Department has spent on the open-source AI model Qwen in the past two years.

Answered by Jake Richards

As Qwen is free and open source, any individual or organisation can copy, edit, and use it without any payment to the author of the model.

Qwen has been used within the Ministry of Justice for targeted analytical and research activities. Whilst use of the model is free, some costs are incurred in provisioning the compute power to execute the model. Compute costs for analytical projects are paid by the Ministry of Justice to Amazon Web Services.
