The question
To ask the Secretary of State for Science, Innovation and Technology, what steps she is taking to keep children in a) Newcastle-under-Lyme and b) Staffordshire safe online.

I am grateful to my Hon. Friend the Member for Newcastle-under-Lyme for his strong advocacy on behalf of his constituents.
Keeping children safe online is a priority for this government. We published the ‘Growing up in the Online World’ consultation, which closed on 26 May. As part of the National Conversation which ran alongside the consultation, the government engaged with children across the UK and heard directly about their experiences.
Following the consultation, the government has now set out plans to ban social media companies offering their services to children under the age of 16, prevent under 16s accessing harmful functions on a wider range of services and prevent under 18s from accessing AI chatbot services that primarily offer sexualised content and require AI chatbots to prevent children under 18s from accessing features that generate sexually explicit conversations. Government will take whatever action is need to keep children safe online.
