Social Media: Children
The question
To ask the Secretary of State for Science, Innovation and Technology, with reference to the press release entitled Social media to be banned for under-16s in landmark government move to give kids their childhood back, published 15 June 2026, whether the user-to-user platforms in scope of the regulation will include (a) Bluesky and (b) Truth Social.
Answered by Kanishka Narayan
On 15 June, we announced that we will be banning social media companies offering their services to under 16s. The government aims to use the same definition as Australia. Their restrictions cover services which are user to user platforms, whose purpose is to enable social interaction, and which allow users to post material alongside algorithms.
Further details will be set out in regulations.
