Recycling: Hospitality Industry

Asked by Mr Andrew SnowdenConservativeDepartment for Environment, Food and Rural AffairsTabled Answered 1 July 2026UIN 13260

The question

To ask the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, what assessment she has made of the effectiveness of the Extended Producer Responsibility scheme in reflecting waste management arrangements in the hospitality sector.

Answered by Mary Creagh

We are aware of industry concerns about producers being charged disposal fees for packaging that is disposed of through commercial waste streams, including in hospitality settings.

We are continuing to work at pace with stakeholders on the treatment of dual-use packaging and packaging that is unlikely to enter the household waste stream. Any future changes would need to be workable, enforceable, and protect the operational integrity of the scheme across all business models.
