Public Transport: Temperature

Asked by Ayoub KhanIndependentDepartment for TransportTabled Answered 7 July 2026UIN 14134

The question

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport, what steps her Department is taking to improve passenger safety and comfort on public transport during periods of extreme heat.

Answered by Keir Mather

Ensuring the welfare of passengers on public transport remains a priority for the Department, including during extreme hot weather. Train operators, along with other public transport operators, encourage all passengers to follow the latest public health and travel advice. For example, during the most recent high temperatures, amended timetables and passenger messaging were developed to support the welfare of passengers and rail staff and bus operators were expected to ensure their fleets prioritised ventilation, driver welfare, and passenger support to maintain, safe comfortable journeys.
