Asylum: Housing
The question
To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department, what estimate she has made of the comparative cost of accommodating asylum seekers in (a) hotels and (b) Ministry of Defence sites per person per night.
Answered by Alex Norris
The Government has been very clear that hotels are not suitable for use to house asylum seekers and are committed to closing every single one and returning them to the communities for their intended use. The cost per person per night for any accommodation varies depending on utilisation and as we are now closing significant numbers of hotels that rate is skewed whilst hotels are being vacated. In October 2025 before the programme of hotel closures the cost was £145 per person per night. For large sites costs are site-specific and are dependent on the rate of increase of the population on the site.
