Marines: Amphibious Warships

Asked by Ben Obese-JectyConservativeMinistry of DefenceTabled Answered 7 July 2026UIN 14028

The question

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence, pursuant to the answer of 20 April 2026 to question 125423 on Project Catherina, and with reference to the Press release “High-speed boats and new drones for elite Commando Force under Defence Investment Plan” published on 28 June 2026, whether this is the new larger Amphibious Transport Ships to support UK Commando Force operations in order to create a new combined fleet with the Netherlands.

Answered by Louise Sandher-Jones

High-speed boats and new drones refer to other aspects of Commando Force Transformation, namely the Joint Commando Craft and other transformative technologies such as uncrewed vessels, next-generation communications, networked targeting and strike drones. Investment in new larger Amphibious Transport Ships is intended to replace the Multi Role Strike Ship programme, which over time may create a new combined amphibious fleet with the Netherlands.
