Memorials: Finance
The question
To ask the Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government, what funding has been provided to support war memorials dedicated to specific faith groups in the last ten years, broken down by religion.
Answered by Nesil Caliskan
Government funding for the design and construction of war memorials, including those associated with particular faith groups, is considered on a case-by-case basis.
In May 2026, the Government announced up to £970,000 of funding towards the creation of a Muslim War Memorial. The memorial will commemorate the contribution and sacrifice of Muslims during the First and Second World Wars.
There are estimated to be more than 70,000 war memorials in the United Kingdom, including prominent memorials which honour the sacrifices of Jewish and Sikh soldiers. The Government’s funding will support the creation of a national memorial dedicated to recognising the services of Muslims in defence of this country.
