International Humanitarian Law

Asked by Chris LawScottish National PartyForeign, Commonwealth and Development OfficeTabled Answered 7 July 2026UIN 14366

The question

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs, what assessment she has made of the potential impact of restructuring the International Humanitarian Law Unit on the Department's capacity to monitor, assess and provide advice on alleged violations of International Humanitarian Law.

Answered by Chris Elmore

As I explained in the answer of 29 April to Questions 129692-95, the media stories on which these questions are based were misleading, and as I reiterated in the House on 1 July, our function in this important area remains and the unit has not closed.
