Artificial Intelligence

Asked by Richard BakerLabourDepartment for Science, Innovation and TechnologyTabled Answered 1 July 2026UIN 900740

The question

To ask the Secretary of State for Science, Innovation and Technology, what steps she is taking to help ensure that the UK has sovereign AI capacity.

Answered by Kanishka Narayan

AI is the most powerful technology of our lifetimes, and the engine of economic growth and of hard power.

Britain must secure greater control and leverage over AI to boost our prosperity and protect our national security - especially in a context where access to the latest frontier models can easily be withdrawn.

Our AI Security Institute is world leading and one of a handful of organisations which had access to Mythos before release.

We have also signalled a decisive shift towards backing more British AI companies through our

  • £500m Sovereign AI Fund
  • Our new £1.1bn AI Hardware Plan
  • And our AI Growth Zones

Which will ensure the UK has the infrastructure needed to seize the transformative power of this technology.
