Shipping: Carbon Emissions

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport, what assessment she has made of the potential impact of shipping emissions on air quality in coastal communities.

The Government recognises that emissions from shipping can affect air quality in coastal areas, particularly near ports and busy shipping routes, and is taking action through the International Maritime Organization (IMO) to reduce emissions from ships. This includes measures such as the North Sea Emission Control Area (ECA), which significantly strengthens air pollution controls for ships in the North Sea and the English Channel. Through the IMO we have also agreed for a North-East Atlantic ECA to come into force in 2027, which will improve air quality for coastal communities and mean all UK waters will be covered.
