Defence: Finance

Asked by Ben Obese-JectyConservativeMinistry of DefenceTabled Answered 15 July 2026UIN 15069

The question

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence, with reference to the Defence Investment Plan, published on 30 June 2026, paragraph 20, what progress has he made in establishing the Defence Investment Unit.

Answered by Luke Pollard

The Defence Investment Plan confirmed that the Ministry of Defence will establish a Defence Investment Unit (DIU) as its centre of expertise for finance and investment, drawing on advice from the Defence Investors Advisory Group, expertise from UK Government Investments and support from the financial services industry.

The Unit will support delivery of the Defence Finance and Investment Strategy (DFIS) and the development of the Defence Investment Roadmap, including work to translate Defence priorities into market-facing propositions. The DIU’s scope, organisation, and resources will be further developed in the coming months.

In April 2026, the Defence Secretary and the Chancellor announced a new Defence Finance secondment programme as part of the Government’s ambition to deepen the partnership between government and the UK’s world-leading financial services sector. The programme will bring industry secondees into the Ministry of Defence, embedding private-sector expertise at the heart of government, to support the delivery of the DFIS and the DIU.
