Artificial Intelligence: Disinformation

Asked by Helen MaguireLiberal DemocratDepartment for Science, Innovation and TechnologyTabled Answered 10 July 2026UIN 15165

The question

To ask the Secretary of State for Science, Innovation and Technology, what steps her Department is taking to help reduce disinformation from AI generated deepfakes.

Answered by Kanishka Narayan

Government is taking action to tackle harms caused by AI-generated content. Under the Online Safety Act (OSA), platforms must assess and mitigate the risk of illegal content, including where it is AI-generated, and take appropriate action to remove it.

Government continues to explore technical solutions to support the transparency of AI-generated content, including through the Deepfake Detection Challenge and the AI Labelling Taskforce.

Alongside this, we are supporting media literacy initiatives to help the public identify misleading and manipulated content online.
