The question
To ask the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, with reference to the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs' press release entitled Government steps up action to tackle illegal deforestation, published on 23 June 2026, what metrics will be used to assess the success of the proposed regulations.

The Glasgow Leaders' Declaration on Forests and Land Use commits the UK to working collectively to halt and reverse forest loss and land degradation by 2030. These regulations are intended to contribute towards delivering that commitment. The Environment Act 2021 sets out a requirement for biennial post implementation reviews of the regulations and Defra is developing a monitoring and evaluation framework to support these reviews. Indicators of success will likely include global deforestation rates, the UK’s estimated deforestation footprint, changes in UK businesses sustainability practices and extent of supply chain traceability and avoided disruption to the UK Internal Market and EU trade flows.
