Office for Nuclear Regulation

Asked by Mr Andrew SnowdenConservativeDepartment for Energy Security and Net ZeroTabled Answered 15 July 2026UIN 16638

The question

To ask the Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero, whether he plans to publish guidance on how the Office for Nuclear Regulation will balance facilitating economic growth with maintaining independent regulatory oversight.

Answered by Michael Shanks

The Nuclear Regulatory Review set out a stark challenge for all of us; government, regulators and industry.

The government is meeting this challenge by taking forward all 47 recommendations, including consideration of how to enable the ONR to consider wider strategic factors without compromising its independence. We have committed to implementing these reforms by the end of 2027.

Work is progressing at pace to carefully consider policy options for each recommendation. Decisions on guidance will be made at a suitable stage of policy development.
