Bank Services: Access

Asked by Mr Andrew SnowdenConservativeTreasuryTabled Answered 13 July 2026UIN 16657

The question

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer, what estimate he has made of the number of communities that lack reasonable access to in-person banking services.

Answered by Rachel Blake

The Government has not made an estimate of the number of communities that lack reasonable access to in-person banking services.

The Government is committed to ensuring that people who need in-person banking can continue to access essential services. That is why the Government commissioned an independent Review into Access to Banking Services, to assess whether changes in access to in-person banking services are causing consumer detriment, the scale of any detriment, and who it affects. The Review will consider access to in-person banking services for both personal and business customers.

HM Treasury launched the Review on 8 June with the publication of a Call for Evidence, which closes on 20 July. Input is sought from consumers, businesses, charities, community organisations, local authorities and industry across the UK. The Review's findings are due in October and will inform future decisions on whether further action is needed.
