Departmental Responsibilities

Asked by Mike WoodConservativeCabinet OfficeTabled Answered 3 September 2026UIN 18632

The question

To ask the Minister for the Cabinet Office, pursuant to the answer of 6 July 2026, to Question 11721, on DFT: Departmental Responsibilities, what requirements departments have to produce internal Strategic Plans and what content should be included within them.

Answered by Cabinet Office

Departments are required to produce Strategic Plans under the reforms to the spending control and accountability framework set out at Budget 2025. Central guidance for strategic plans asks departments to set out their outcomes, metrics, risks and strategies for delivering their outcomes using their agreed resources, but grants departments discretion to adapt the approach to their needs - this is essential to ensuring plans are tailored and useful to individual departments rather than serving as a prescriptive paper exercise.
