Asked by Mike WoodConservativeForeign, Commonwealth and Development OfficeTabled Answered 8 September 2026UIN 19352

The question

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs, pursuant to the answer of 13 July 2026 to Question 15714 on Lord Mandelson, for what reason the business case was not sent to Ministers in her Department.

Answered by Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office

The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) followed the correct process for making the special severance payment to Peter Mandelson; agreement to the payment was given by the FCDO Permanent Under Secretary, as the department's Accounting Officer, then the Chief Secretary to the Treasury. The relevant documents were released in Part of a Return to an Address of the Honourable the House of Commons dated 4 February 2026 relating to the appointment of Lord Mandelson as His Majesty's Ambassador to Washington, Volume I, on 11 March 2026 (pages 104-116).
