The question

To ask the Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government, with reference to the Best Value Notice issued to Basildon Borough Council on 15 July 2026, whether concerns relating to the Council's preparedness for local government reorganisation influenced the decision to issue the Notice.

Answered by Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government

The Best Value Notice issued to Basildon Borough Council on 15 July 2026 sets out the Department's concerns and the actions expected of the Council. The Government will continue to monitor progress against those expectations and consider the latest available evidence before determining whether any further support or intervention is necessary.

As set out in the Notice, Ministers expect the Council to demonstrate sufficient improvement and strong governance as it prepares for local government reorganisation.
