Business Rates

Asked by Sir James CleverlyConservativeMinistry of Housing, Communities and Local GovernmentTabled Answered 7 September 2026UIN 20273

The question

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer, with reference to the answers of 4 June 2026, to Question HL323, and of 29 June 2026, to Question 11414, on Business Rates: Tax Yields, whether the announcement by the Prime Minister on 23 July 2026 of a £100 million tax relief has reduced the projected aggregate tax yields in each year from 2027-28, or whether other business rates will be increased to make up the shortfall in revenue from the new relief.

Answered by Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government

The Government announced on 23 July 2026 an additional 20 per cent business rates relief for pubs, social clubs and all but the very largest live music venues in England from 2027-28. This builds on the support package already provided to ratepayers following the 2026 revaluation and is intended to support businesses that play an important role in local communities.

The announcement set out that these changes will be fully funded, including through reviewing reliefs for businesses that do not make a positive contribution to local communities, such as vape shops. Further detail will be set out at the Budget.
