British Nationals Abroad: Electoral Register

Asked by Sir James CleverlyConservativeMinistry of Housing, Communities and Local GovernmentTabled Answered 8 September 2026UIN 20358

The question

To ask the Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government, if she will take steps to support overseas British citizens to register to vote as part of the processing for applying or reviewing their British passport.

Answered by Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government

The Government is committed to introducing a more automated approach to electoral registration over the coming years and is actively exploring ways to do so. We intend to test a range of new automated approaches that make better use of data and make the process easier and quicker for citizens.

The Government is also exploring ways to encourage and support people to register or vote or update their entries on the register when they use other government services. This could include making it easier for citizens to engage with electoral registration processes as part of their interaction with government services where appropriate.
