Council Tax

Asked by Sir James CleverlyConservativeMinistry of Housing, Communities and Local GovernmentTabled Answered 8 September 2026UIN 20363

The question

To ask the Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government, with reference to the blog, MHCLG in the Media, "Misleading claims on council tax", 31 July 2026, what is the basis that the MHCLG estimates given to the OBR on council tax receipts are incorrect, and whether Ministers will issue a Ministerial Correction to the answer of 29 June 2026, to Question 11413, on Council Tax.

Answered by Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government

The England Level Council Tax Forecast to 2030-31 is based on estimates of the council tax levels that councils may set between 2026-27 and 2030-31. As councils have not yet set council tax levels for future years, these figures are estimates based on referendum principles and form part of the Government's standard forecasting process. Actual council tax receipts will depend on decisions taken by local authorities. The forecasts do not represent council tax decisions that authorities are required to take. No correction is therefore required to the answer of 29 June 2026 to Question 11413 on Council Tax.
