Public Sector: Borrowing

Asked by Sir James CleverlyConservativeTreasuryTabled Answered 8 September 2026UIN 20388

The question

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer, whether he plans to change fiscal rules in relation to borrowing for (a) infrastructure and housing and (b) combined authority mayoral funding.

Answered by Treasury

The Chancellor has been clear that fiscal discipline is his first priority, because fiscal credibility is the bedrock for economic stability and national security.

The Chancellor and the Prime Minister are in lockstep that the government will meet the fiscal rules with a buffer against uncertainty. The fiscal rules keep debt on a sustainable path while allowing borrowing for investment.
