Asked by Stuart AndersonConservativeMinistry of DefenceTabled Answered 8 September 2026UIN 21460

The question

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence, with reference to page 15 of his department's Strategic Defence review, published 2 June 2025, what recent progress has been made on the two enabling roles for Defence.

Answered by Ministry of Defence

Since the publication of the Strategic Defence Review, the Ministry of Defence has made substantial progress on both enabling roles. The Government has published the Defence Industrial Strategy and the Defence Investment Plan, the latter of which commits nearly £300 billion of investment over the next four years to strengthen the United Kingdom’s defence industrial base, accelerate innovation, improve procurement, and make Defence an engine for growth.

Measures include increased investment in novel technologies, the establishment of UK Defence Innovation, and support for jobs, skills, and exports across the United Kingdom.

The Government has also taken action to strengthen national preparedness and resilience. This includes measures to improve homeland defence, cyber resilience, and the protection of critical national infrastructure, alongside initiatives to renew the nation’s contract with those who serve and to increase public engagement with Defence.
