Airports: EU Emissions Trading Scheme

Asked by Greg SmithConservativeDepartment for TransportTabled Answered 8 September 2026UIN 21821

The question

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport, what assessment her Department has made of the potential impact of the European Commission's proposed extension of the EU Emissions Trading Scheme on passenger demand at airports.

Answered by Department for Transport

The UK and EU are currently in negotiations to pursue the linking of the UK Emissions Trading Scheme (UK ETS) and the EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS). The Government is seeking to secure a mutually beneficial outcome and will ensure that any linking agreement provides clear benefits for UK industry, consumers and wider stakeholders. We welcome stakeholders' views on the proposals set out in the Review and are open to further discussion as the EU decision-making process progresses.
