Electronic Government

Asked by Navendu MishraLabourDepartment for Business, Innovation, Science and TradeTabled Answered 8 September 2026UIN 21933

The question

To ask the Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, whether her Department has examined the Public Interest Technology Crews established by the Mayor of New York City; and if she will make an assessment of the potential merits of piloting a similar model across UK city regions, including Greater Manchester.

Answered by Department for Business, Innovation, Science and Trade

The Government is aware of international approaches to building local digital capability, including those developed in New York. The UK already has world leading in-house digital capability through Government Digital Services (GDS), including specialist teams like i.AI. The GDS Local team bridges central and local government, helping councils and regional authorities design solutions that fit the UK context, including the new Digital Devolution programme, a joint initiative between GDS, No.10 North and MHCLG to strengthen local digital capability.
