East Midlands Railway: Rolling Stock

Asked by Shivani RajaConservativeDepartment for TransportTabled Answered 8 September 2026UIN 22343

The question

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport, what progress her Department has made with East Midlands Railway on the introduction of new rolling stock; and what assessment she has made of the potential impact of this stock on passengers travelling to and from Leicester.

Answered by Department for Transport

The Department recognises that delays to the introduction of East Midlands Railway’s (EMR) new Aurora trains have affected train resilience during the transition period, increasing the risk of cancellations and reduced capacity when trains are unavailable for service.

DfT Operator Ltd (DFTO), on behalf of the Department, working closely with EMR, Hitachi and industry partners are doing all they can to restore the situation. They are working to increase the number of available trains, minimise disruption for passengers and ensure the new trains are introduced into passenger service as smoothly as possible.
