Mental Health Services: Domestic Abuse

Asked by Shivani RajaConservativeDepartment of Health and Social CareTabled Answered 7 September 2026UIN 22363

The question

To ask the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, with reference to findings that domestic abuse may contribute to up to 1,000 suicides nationally each year, what assessment she has made of the adequacy of the NHS Suicide Prevention Strategy in screening mental health service users for domestic abuse and coercive control.

Answered by Department of Health and Social Care

The Hon Member raises a hugely important issue, which matters not just for the National Suicide Prevention Strategy but also the Government’s strategy to tackle Violence against Women and Girls. This is a personal priority for my Rt Hon. Friend, the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, and she will address these and related issues further in the coming months.
