University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust: Accident and Emergency Departments

Asked by Shivani RajaConservativeDepartment of Health and Social CareTabled Answered 8 September 2026UIN 22484

The question

To ask the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, what steps her Department is taking to improve emergency department response times at University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust.

Answered by Department of Health and Social Care

The Government is committed to improving urgent and emergency care services and reducing emergency department waiting times, including at University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust.

NHS England is working with the Leicester and Leicestershire health and care system to improve urgent and emergency care performance by increasing capacity, improving patient flow, reducing delays to discharge and strengthening alternatives to hospital attendance where appropriate.

This work is being taken forward through the system’s 2026/27 winter priorities, which include prevention and admission avoidance; strengthening alternatives to emergency departments and ambulance conveyance, including urgent treatment centres and same day emergency care; improving flow through hospitals and community services; and Home First and reablement approaches to support timely discharge.

The system also has arrangements for monitoring demand and capacity, managing escalation and coordinating action across providers to respond to pressures on urgent and emergency care services.
