Public Sector Debt

Asked by Shivani RajaConservativeTreasuryTabled Answered 8 September 2026UIN 22464

The question

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer, what recent estimate his Department has made of the national debt per British household; and the potential impact net debt has on long-term fiscal stability.

Answered by Treasury

The Office for National Statistics publishes statistics on the level of public debt in its monthly Public Sector Finances release.

For full ONS statistics please see their most recent publication:

The Chancellor has been clear that fiscal discipline is a priority, and is committed to the fiscal rules, which put debt on a downward path.
