Asked by Mr Andrew SnowdenConservativeMinistry of DefenceTabled Answered 7 September 2026UIN 22710

The question

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence, whether his Department has issued guidance on the relevance of the Overseas Operations (Service Personnel and Veterans) Act 2021 to investigations relating to Operation Banner.

Answered by Ministry of Defence

The Overseas Operations (Service Personnel and Veterans) Act 2021 is limited in scope to legal proceedings arising from overseas military operations outside the British Islands. The Act has no application for actions committed in Northern Ireland during Operation Banner.

This Government has brought forward separate legislation to deal with the legacy of the Troubles.
