The question

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence, what is the full scope of the Future Strategic Tanker Aircraft programme.

Answered by Ministry of Defence

Voyager is the RAF’s only Air-to-Air Refuelling tanker. It also provides strategic passenger and cargo Air Transport capability, including Medical Evacuation and VIP transport.

Fourteen Voyager aircraft and a complete support package are provided to the RAF under a 27 year £10.5bn Private Finance Initiative contract signed with the AirTanker consortium in 2008. AirTanker is responsible for providing the Voyager aircraft at the required condition and mission availability rates throughout the contract term. In addition to the aircraft, the contract provides training services and infrastructure including purpose-built buildings at RAF Brize Norton, the RAF’s air transport hub.
