Defence: Global Navigation Satellite Systems

Asked by Ben Obese-JectyConservativeMinistry of DefenceTabled Answered 8 September 2026UIN 22820

The question

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence, what is the scope of the Alternative Navigation Project.

Answered by Ministry of Defence

The Alternative Navigation Project is investigating alternatives to Global Positioning Systems (GPS) used by the Ministry of Defence (MOD). Seeking to build resilience, initial research has identified a range of potential solutions for MOD's future use. The project scope also includes maturing a range of technologies to inform future development and investment activities beyond the current phase.

An initial contract for some assessment phase activities has been placed with QinetiQ. Potential solutions will continue to be investigated, working closely with wider Government departments that include the Department for Business, Innovation, Science and Trade and the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory.
