Russia: Navy
The question
To ask the Secretary of State for Defence, what assessment has he made of the change in posture by the Russian navy that saw the Russian frigate Neustrashimy conduct a live-fire exercise off the coast of Plymouth on 20 July 2026.
Answered by Ministry of Defence
The Ministry of Defence, alongside our Allies and partners, routinely monitors the activity of foreign warships operating in areas of interest to the United Kingdom. Russia continues to employ its naval forces across the North Atlantic and European waters in support of its wider military and strategic objectives. Any activity conducted by Russian naval vessels is assessed within the broader context of Russia's military posture and patterns of behaviour. The Royal Navy, working closely with other Government departments and international partners, maintains a constant watch on maritime activity relevant to the UK's security and is prepared to respond where necessary.
