Department for Transport: Defence
The question
To ask the Secretary of State for Transport, with reference to the Defence funding update, HCWS165, published on 30 June 2026, what progress she has made on identifying the £0.8 billion of savings in her Department to fund the Defence Investment Plan.
Answered by Department for Transport
As set out in the DIP statement, all Departments capital budgets were reduced by 1%. DfT then committed to making further savings of c£700m from the roads sector. The £800m in the HCWS includes the impact from the Barnett formula.
To meet these additional roads savings, the Department is currently undertaking consultation on reductions to the third Road Investment Strategy (RIS3).
DfT will also explore limited reductions to as yet uncommitted roads funding. This government remains committed to protecting funding for local authorities to mend potholes and repair their roads.
