Railways: Armed Forces

Asked by Ben Obese-JectyConservativeDepartment for TransportTabled Answered 8 September 2026UIN 23231

The question

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport, pursuant to the answer of 22 July 2026 to question 18797 on Railways: Armed Forces, what discussions she has had with the Secretary of State for Defence on the integration of military and domestic rail services.

Answered by Department for Transport

The Department for Transport and the Ministry of Defence work closely on issues relating to the integration of military and domestic rail services. The Department for Transport recognises the important role rail can play in military mobility and logistics. Aligning with the Government’s Home Defence Programme, the Department for Transport is working closely with the Ministry of Defence to identify how the transport sector, including rail, can support military mobility.

This work builds on existing cooperation and achievements, including Exercise Hedgehog in 2025 which saw the deployment of UK armed forces into Europe via the Eurotunnel and Eurostar.
