Traffic Lights
The question
To ask the Secretary of State for Transport, what assessment she has made of the need for different traffic light phasing for HGVs leaving Brampton Hut Services.
Answered by Department for Transport
National Highways is responsible for the operation of traffic signals at the Brampton Hut interchange.
The arm of the roundabout used by vehicles exiting Brampton Hut Services is not itself controlled by traffic signals. Instead, those vehicles enter the roundabout during short gaps in the wider signal sequence, known as intergreen periods. At this interchange vehicles have an approximately 6 second window to join the roundabout.
National Highways reviewed and changed the operation of the signals at the interchange in February 2026 to improve efficient traffic flow and has no current plans to amend the signal phasing. The signals will be reviewed again as part of planned refurbishment works during the 2026 to 2031 Road Investment Strategy period, currently expected in 2029-30.
