Prison Accommodation
The question
To ask the Secretary of State for Justice, with reference to the National Infrastructure and Service Transformation Authority Major Projects Annual Report 2025 to 2026, Tables, Accelerated Houseblocks, what the scope increases are that have caused the programme’s end date to be pushed back by 2 years and 4 months.
Answered by Ministry of Justice
As of September 2026, the Accelerated Houseblocks Programme has delivered 170 prison places, with around 2,700 remaining in delivery.
The scope at HMPs Wayland and Hindley were increased to deliver additional prison places in response to prison population pressures, to improve value for money through economies of scale and to make better use of available footprint. This included increasing capacity at HMP Wayland from 121 to 247 places and at HMP Hindley from 494 to 741 places.
