West of England Line

Asked by Adam DanceLiberal DemocratDepartment for TransportTabled Answered 8 September 2026UIN 24276

The question

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport, if she will take steps to ensure trains on the West of England line are air-conditioned.

Answered by Department for Transport

Steps are already being taken to improve trains on the West of England line. SWR's Class 158 and Class 159 trains are currently undergoing a heavy maintenance and refurbishment programme which commenced in December 2025. The programme includes air-conditioning and heating fan overhauls, door and toilet overhauls, refreshed interiors, updated seat finishes, improved passenger information systems and the introduction of at-seat power.

SWR is responsible for maintaining its fleet and ensuring that trains are fit for service. The Department expects train operators to provide a safe and comfortable environment for passengers.
