Energy: Storage

Asked by Callum AndersonLabourDepartment for Energy Security and Net ZeroTabled Answered 7 September 2026UIN 24415

The question

To ask the Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero, what steps she is taking to ensure that technologies supported through the Ultra-Long Duration Energy Storage Challenge can progress from research and development to commercial deployment at scale in the UK.

Answered by Department for Energy Security and Net Zero

The Ultra-Long Duration Energy Storage (ULDES) Challenge is part of the Government's Research and Development Mission Accelerator Programme (R&D MAP). A key element of the Programme is a focus not only on technology development, but also on the wider policy, regulatory, market and commercial conditions needed for successful deployment. DESNZ is working closely with UK Research and Innovation, regulators and industry to identify how they can work together to ensure that technologies emerging from the Programme can achieve real-world deployment and impact.
