Batteries: China
The question
To ask the Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero, how many gigawatts of operational UK battery energy storage capacity are supplied by Chinese manufacturers.
Answered by Department for Energy Security and Net Zero
China is the dominant supplier of lithium-ion battery components worldwide, including in the UK. The energy analysts Modo Energy estimated in 2025 that 80% of cells in grid-scale storage systems are Chinese-made. As of August 2026, there is 8.1GW of grid-scale battery storage capacity in GB. However, the Department does not hold data on the supply chains of individual projects.
