Sports: Business Rates

Asked by Edward MorelloLiberal DemocratTreasuryTabled Answered 8 September 2026UIN 25033

The question

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer, what assessment he has made of the potential impact of business rates on the financial sustainability of community sports clubs in West Dorset constituency.

Answered by Treasury

Community sports clubs are eligible for the new permanently lower multipliers for eligible RHL properties. These provide nearly £1 billion per year of support to the RHL sector and benefit over 750,000 properties.

The Government has introduced a support package worth £4.3 billion to protect ratepayers seeing their bills increase because of the revaluation. This includes the Supporting Small Business scheme which caps bill increases for the smallest businesses losing some or all of their small business rates relief, rural rate relief, or RHL relief.

Properties mainly used for charitable purposes, such as by a community amateur sports club, may also be eligible for charitable rate relief which gives up to 80% off a business rates bill.
