Subscriptions
The question
To ask the Secretary of State for Business, Innovation, Science and Trade, with reference to the Government press release entitled PM starts roll out of ‘everyday fixes’ on the cost of living – ending rip-off discounts and subscription traps, published on 9 August 2026, what steps will be taken to ensure that businesses which comply with the new subscription rules are not disadvantaged by competitors failing to comply.
Answered by Department for Business, Innovation, Science and Trade
The subscriptions rules protect consumers from paying for subscriptions they don’t want. This supports a fairer and more level playing field for businesses as consumers can spend their money elsewhere across the economy.
Authorities including Trading Standards and the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) will be able to take enforcement action against non-compliant businesses, including issuing financial penalties. The Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act also strengthens enforcement by giving the CMA direct enforcement powers.
Consumers have new cancellation rights under the regime. If traders breach certain duties, the consumer can cancel their subscription contract and may receive a refund.
